Fish Files – 2 clips
Monday, March 12th, 2007here are 2 clips. First one contains my newest fish: a yellow albino peacock cichlid. Check out the way it feeds! so cool… it sucks the food in…and you can see bubbles coming from its gills after each time it attacks the water surface!
The second one is about two fighting fish fighting…one’s red and the other is blue… the blue one wasn’t mating…so I found out that there could be a chance of triggering its mating instincts by letting it fight…so… fight lo… enjoy!
Ngo oo or the char ku eh di owl.
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006Sunday was the soul survivor concert. well had lot’s of things go the way I didn’t want or expected it to. Lotsa. when I had the oppurtunity I just talked it out with God…but in the end…coming back home. God cheered me up.
the big fat pregnant guppy finally gave birth….so I went and caught the fries. cause guppies are cannibalistic. so I caught them…and initial estimation was 30-40. it was 1 am in the morning then. so I went to sleep. all the while feeling teased by God :”You can’t be angry anymore can you? haha…”
next day did a count. found out it was 39 fries. went to feed the mother. found another 6 more…and today…I found another 2 more…which brings the grand total to: 47. thanks GOd!
By the way, I’m want to sell my display tank complete with fish and all. Going at RM150(negotiable). Originally cost RM300 to RM400. anyone interested?
WE HAVE FRIES!!! (they aren’t french.)
Monday, July 31st, 2006yup. baby fishies have emerged. haven’t been able to photographed them until today. erm… that’s because only today are most of them 2.5mm in length. yes…they are that tiny…and there are HUNDREDS of them on my tank…about 200 to 300? ya…some died…don’t know why…some probably got eaten…erm…I’ve probably accidentally killed some when siphoning out the dirt in the tank…some got caught in the rotting fish yolk particles… yes I’m feeding them chicken egg yolk…hard boiled and mixed in water…it’ll dissolve into tiny particles…so cool…
when they first hatched….the fries had a natural instinct to try and stay in the air bubbles or at least some where there…so the large leave was like some sort of extra-terestrial mother ship hovering around…and there’d be a bunch of little fries about the size of 0.5mm below it sinking 3 cm in a straight line and wiggleling its way back up in a “S” pattern….so cool…
now they’re bigger…still waiting for them to mature…I’m hoping that there’d be variations in colour….maybe black, white, green, red? and that the colours be mixed…yup…and I’m think of selling some…erm…maybe most of them…see la….here’s how the fish looks like now:

p.s. hui ying…I don’t think trying to observe two fish mating constitutes pornography. Anyway I didn’t get to see it also…dang. But I did observe part of the mating ritual. muhahaha….ahem.
erm.
Sunday, July 23rd, 2006In case you’re wondering where I was this past weekend, I was doing a rush gig for the Rotary Club Installation. Heard there were some big shots. But I don’t recognise/know any of them. Anyway, I tried again to mate the fighting fish…and I believe they’ve mated. the female looks more slender and the bubble nest has been formed and is being maitained by the male. Anyway, I wasn’t sure if they had mated until I saw the male being very hostile to the female. I read somewhere that after mating, the male thinks of the female as a threat to the eggs because the female may eat the eggs. Well…I’m just hoping everything works out. I’m giving the male 2 days. I read that the eggs will hatch in 24 hours and this can be seen by little tails hanging out of the eggs. So I’m now waiting to see that. If in 2 days nothing happens. Then the male goes back to its old small plastic tank to prepare for mating again. (this sounds like a science experiment. Well here’s a picture of the bubble nest with the male guarding and tending it.
Male + Female = Fries??
Sunday, July 16th, 2006Prove that:
and
in
= 200-300 eggs
= 200-300 baby bettas
Answer: I MESSED UP!!! I put the 2 together…yada yada…but they just won’t mate!!! seesh!! so I took them out this(saturday) morning and broke down the breeding tank…only to find out in the evening that the female was laying eggs!!! so I rushed to get the female and male in the breeding tank so that the male can fertilize the eggs… but the male was just so disinterested…to the point where it looked sick!! so I changed the water…I think I added too much dechlorinenizer…so I filled it with filtered water instead…the male looked more responsive…but still they didn’t mate!!…and the male became disinterested and just lay lifeless on the bottom of the tank. So I took them out.
So that’s that for trying out the Thai Breeding Method…so the article says…I mixed it with abit of American Breeding Method…anyway…just read another article which mentioned the placement of the two fish in seperate tanks so that they can look at each other and so induce mating…and it’s suppose to happen for a week straight…my PLKN friend told me that also on Friday night…AFTER I had put the two fish together…. dang…I stuffed it with food for a day…my friend told me to stuff it for 2 weeks….the article says one week. why I propose a truce…let’s stuff me instead!! yay!!!
p.s. I goeth to the island called Singapore todayeth(sunday) at 10. don’t miss me…be accurate…aim.
The Fish Files – #1
Thursday, April 27th, 2006The plan was devised and so started the water collection procedures.
The next day, a few designated pick up points were reconnaissance was carried out. One fish shop was singled out. Thus phase two was activated – Purchase of the “goods”.
The plan was simple. A low maintainance tank. Bang. Into the fish shop. Picked up a small plastic tank, 1 meter tubing, black gravel, fish food and the subjects. Advanced on to Apollo Shop to buy white LED’s and necessary components to create aquarium lights. We gained new intel on the possibility of a better fish shop “in front of Bomba”. Got the stuff, ran.
All things considered, we were ahead of the game. The habitat was set up, and the subjects, 2 Neon Tetras were released in to the it.
The next day, subjects were still alive. Unforeseen problems had forced the guys to stage another Purchase Plan. This time, it was lighting. The LED’s were not strong enought, and amatuer wiring and bad trouble-shooting skills caused 1 of the LED’s to burn. Target was dim blueish light that would enhance the subjects’ glow. With that, troops were already in position whitin 24 hours of launching the plan. We went to the new fish shop, bought a pump, air stone, clip on light and fake plants. Done.
Overall the plan was a success, cost was still low and the stuff worked. All equipment function as they should, the light was bright, the air stone created streams of bubbles, the pump was pumping and the fake plants were…erm…faking.
An hour into fitting the new equipment, problems popped up. The pump and air stone were creating a water current that was too strong for our tiny subjects. The plants were too fake large for the tank and looked pretty pitiful too.
We immediately removed the equipment. Raced against time the next day to get the lighting changed. Didn’t find anything worth our time except a bigger tank. Took it, pulled out.
Long story short, I have a 8.5 gallon/35 litres aqurium complete with fake plants, bubble screen, driftwood (looks like Mount Everest) and black substract. My fish as of 27th April 2006, 10:26pm is:
- 7 Neon Tetras(one died of starvation, it was a recluse. So, it was its fault)
- 3 Guppies(male)
- 2 Penguin Tetras(helicopter like movement, seriously.)
- 1 Betta(fighting fish, it’s purplelish)
- 1 Cherry Barb(awesomely cute)
- 1 Golden Pencil Tetra(pretty cool fish too!!)
The Fish Files – The secret to happy fish keeping.
Monday, April 10th, 2006Three essentials for fish keeping:
Patience. Don’t do everything at one go. The journey to a beautiful aquarium is half the fun. And it’s just your hobby, not your life.
Deep wallet. Prepare about RM300 to get a decent tank up. With a few frills.
And knowing what you want to achieve and how to get.
It’s pretty fun. And if you want to have a better fish-keeping experience, ask the best Fish-Keeper of fish-keepers. He’ll help you. But you must believe (James 1:6)!!
The Fish Files – Useful tips for tropical fish owner wanna-be’s
Saturday, April 8th, 2006After 3 frustating days of setting up, tearing down, setting up and tearing down, I think I know enough to give simple and useful tips for people who want to keep TROPICAL fish. Bear in mind that I have zero idea about how to keep salt-water fish. But some of it are general enough to be applied to both salt/fresh water fish.
1. YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE.
2. Do your homework and research the fish you want to keep and what sort of environment they are most comfortable in. You won’t want to mix fish that would fight each other, or worst, eat up or bully other fish.
3. When buying equipment from shops. Make sure you know what is really needed and not what the salesperson tells you is needed.
4. Pumps are not always necessary. It depends on a case to case basis. If you don’t have that many “oxygen” users, then it’s not necessary as the air would be absorbed into the water by itself.
5. If you want to have a plant, make sure you’ll be placing your tank near sunlight or have the necessary light equipment so that it would photosynthesize rather than respire as your fish need the oxygen too.
6. Make sure the aquarium lighting, temperature, pH, substrate(the ground/gravel) and size is suitable for your fish before buying any fish.
7. Set up the tank. Do not buy the fish yet.
8. Make sure you have enough water to wash and fill the tank.
9. DO NOT WASH EQUIPMENT WITH UNTREATED TAP WATER.
10. No need for expensive chlorine removers. Collect rainwater and use it after the the dust particles have settled. Another way is to collect tap water, air it outside overnight. The chlorine will evaporate from the water. If you want to speed it up, hook up a pump. The chlorine would evaporate faster. But I’m not sure how much faster it would be.
11. When starting a new tank, use 2 hardy fish like tetra or guppies to cycle the tank. Cycling the tank makes sure that the necesarry bacteria are there to turn the toxins in to something that’s not toxic to the fishies. Cycling takes about a month and at least 30 days. If you keep on introducing new fish, the cycle would be strained and may start over again.
12. After the tank has finishd cycling, introduce not more than 2 fish at a time a week apart from the next batch of fish to introduce.
13. When you change water, change 10% to 15% at a time. Some fish are used to flowing rivers/stream so they may require more water changes.
14. Feed as often as you need. Put the food in, scoop up the extra after 5 minutes. If not, the food will rott and poison your fish. You won’t want that to happen.
